A couple more cakes

Here are a couple more cakes that I made in the last few weeks. Here's the first one, which I am quite proud of. I can't take any credit for the design, I copied it from a picture I found (I think the company was called Fairy Hill Cakes).

This next one clearly demonstrates that I need more practice with the piping bag.

Crochet stuff to come later.

Peggy Porschen imitation

I recently discovered Peggy Porschen and her fabulous cakes. I made this one for my friend to celebrate her finishing her degree. Peggy's original version of this cake is covered in fondant and has piped lines with royal icing (hers are also mini cakes), but I thought I would switch things up and cover the cake in chocolate buttercream (because there can never be too much chocolate in the world) and make the stripes from rolled fondant. When you see another cake I made that had piped lines, you'll see why fondant was the right way to go here.

Cupcakes!

My brother's girlfriend wanted some cupcakes to take to a New Year's party with her, so we whipped up this batch while my brother fell asleep on the sofa and slobbered all over my cushions.

They are just a basic vanilla cupcake with vanilla, strawberry or chocolate buttercream on top and we made some little flowers and things from fondant. A spectrum of colour!

Cake number 2

And here is the second cake I made in my class. It is a chocolate fruit cake (which I had never had or made before, but I think I would label it A Success), covered with marzipan and white fondant. The flowers are made from fondant and the butterflies from sugar paste that were sprayed with colour. Pretty, no?

First cake!

Here it is! My Very First Decorated Cake. (Ok, that's not entirely true, I made a cake for my sister's bridal shower a few years ago, but here is where I'm starting from now.) I made this at the first class I attended in November. Unfortunately, I didn't have quite enough chocolate flakes for all the spikes, so they are a little messy (trying to cut up a chocolate flake into thin pieces is not easy. And I had to eat the pieces that were too small to use...) and I ended up sprinkling the broken bits over the top as well.

Ta da!! A hedgehog! I named him Harrison. And then ate him (with help from a few other people).

Welcome!

Hi All and welcome to my blog! The first thing I should tell you is that I'm pretty much brand new to both of these crafts. I have done a fair amount of baking and I enjoy cooking, but cake decorating is new to me. I took a class with my local adult education centre back in November and since then, I've taken the opportunity to make cakes for family birthdays.

I had never picked up a crocket hook before August. While visiting my sister in Florida, my mum taught me the basics of a starting chain and how to single crochet, when I returned my cousin showed me how to crochet a basic granny square and from there, I'm working the rest out by watching tutorials on YouTube. I've been scouring the internet and I've come across loads of patterns I'd like to try a spent way too much money on building up my yarn collection in preparation for trying said patterns. We shall see how it goes!

Well, here we go....
